Work Search Buddy: An Antidote to the Job Search Loneliness Epidemic

By Paul Cecala, GCDF, 1/28/2026

This is the second of a blog series “Take Control of Your Job Search Loneliness” with excerpts from Paul Cecala’s upcoming book!

In the first article of this series I briefly posted that seeking work is often a lonely experience but it does not need to be. One of the three solutions I recommend is to find a Work Search Buddy.

Work Search Buddies are two individuals who are in an active work search process and who are committed to helping each other and keeping each other accountable to their own work search goals.

Sumit S. (Technology Program Manager) shared,

“I met my work search buddy through a community networking workshop, we had similar backgrounds and agreed to meet afterwards. I asked, “How are you holding up through your job search?” and he opened up about the struggles he was having with his budget, family’s expectations and the lowballing he was experiencing from recruiters. And he asked me and I unexpectedly opened up about my circumstances in being out of work and the challenges I was facing. I had never met this person before, but we immediately had a kinship. We were in contact regularly sometimes asking for a quick conversation to share a win or complain about an unpleasant experience. I felt both of our confidence going up and coincidentally each of us landed around the same time. And we stay in touch again to check in every once in a while.”

Primary Benefit – Accountability

The single most important responsibility of one’s work search buddy is to hold each other accountable to doing the arduous work of job search. One of the most difficult challenges of being in work search is that you no longer have an organization or boss to keep you accountable. Few of us have the necessary self-discipline to stay focused on the hard and sometimes grinding work of job search, especially over the longer haul. A work search buddy can provide a balance of support as well as “tough love” that is necessary to keep you focused on the best activities to land gainful employment again. Accountability keeps the search moving toward the ultimate goal of work.

As John G. (a Sr. HR executive) shares, “Sometimes I need someone to give me a swift kick to jolt me out of a bad habit or thought process. I knew I could count on my buddy to do that when needed but follow it with the support of helping me get back on my horse and moving again.”

And Sandra T. (a Project Management Professional) states, “One of the hardest ‘jobs’ I have ever had is looking for a job. There were times when my buddy was the only person I felt understood what I was going through and could offer the encouragement I needed at the time.”

Added benefits of a buddy

  • Beyond accountability, a Work Search Buddy provides these other important benefits:
  • A focus on the tactics of your work search. We all need help at times staying centered on the tedious work at hand.
  • An alternative perspective to the situation presenting now. How often do you find that after sharing an experience or plan with someone else, their view sheds a whole new light on the problem shifting your response completely?!
  • Latest ideas for finding success based on the buddy’s intimate knowledge of your work search goals. It can be hard to brainstorm as a single person, but add another to the mix and how many more ideas and opportunities arise? Again, this is one of the ways a work search buddy can provide the positive thinking and motivation needed.
  • The positive emotional and psychological support one might need from time-to-time that cannot be received from others. This is not to say the buddy becomes your therapist in any way. However, having someone that you can trust to vent with, who is going through many of the same emotional experiences of the oft-felt rejection in search, the ire of family members, the fears and anxieties of money concerns and more, can be invaluable. Your buddy can give the encouragement needed to get you back to job searching and help move you forward.
  • Your buddy may become a trusted mentor and mentee relationship. When in related careers, buddies often find the relationship useful while employed for the independent outsider perspective.

Some of the kinds of questions work search buddies will ask each other, challenge each other to answer more accurately or completely, and hold each other accountable to can be:

  1. What are you going to accomplish today?
  2. Did you meet your goals for yesterday? If not, why not? How can you prevent that from happening again?
  3. What are the roadblocks or obstacles that are in your way of doing that?
  4. What is preventing you from moving forward today?
  5. Is that really the best use of your time today?

There are many others, of course; but these should give an idea of what daily conversations can look like.

It is well documented both in research and anecdotally in the practices of many coaches that one of the biggest hurdles job seekers face is the psychological issues of the sudden loneliness and isolation of a job loss. Add to that, in many cases, much of a person’s identity is wrapped into their job. During job search the tactic goes from working with others to working alone. The camaraderie is gone, the security of having others around to bounce ideas is gone. Likely, if you have been out of work for more than a few weeks, you share some of these feelings.

I remember, after my last job as an employee, I did not leave the house or speak to professional peers for nearly three weeks. There is a shell shock moment in being laid off or fired.  Taking a moment to reflect, reset and gather is also important. Many of my clients have similar experiences.

It’s a hard switch, but does it have to be that way?

PMI-NJ uses the Work Search Buddy Process

Just one more endorsement of the value, if you will indulge me. PMI-NJ, The Project Management Institute – New Jersey chapter, was so taken by my first book on work search buddies that they modeled a “Work Search Buddy” program on my process. I consulted with them on customizing the concept for their membership. Their program has matched dozens of members over the past 5 years. It has been one of the most successful examples of an institutionalized program I have seen. And, what a great benefit to its members! PMI-NJ is actively supporting its out-of-work members with a host of programs, but this is unique to them!

As you can see, there are many benefits to finding a Work Search Buddy, accountability and defeating loneliness being the two most significant. But having a buddy does require work on your part too. You need to be emotionally and mentally ready to work with one.

In a “soon to be published” book, I will be sharing my guidance on the “who, what, where, when, and how” of securing your own work search buddy. Additionally, the book which will be an expanded version of a previous and now out of print title I authored, will look at the other two recommendations I have for combatting the loneliness and motivation issues of a job search.

Watch my social media, website and Amazon for the title, “Take Control of Your Job Search Loneliness” currently scheduled for a late March or early April publication.

In the case of both the Work Search Buddy and the Strategic Work Search Team, you set your own goals, and your buddy or team holds you accountable to your goals. They may recommend goals for you to adopt, but you must take ownership of your own goals and thereby take responsibility to do them.
