Recently 2 significant events in our country’s history collided exposing opposite views and approaches to governing: the funeral of President Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of Donald Trump. A particular dichotomy I experienced in watching these events while listening to the eulogies of the former and speeches of the latter was their perspective on DEI policies. Carter’s grandson reminded us that President Carter, in just four years, had appointed more judges of minority and women than all 36 of his predecessors combined, approached everyone (including political adversaries) with compassion, empathy and friendship. Conversely, Mr. Trump has appointed what has been described as the most conservative supreme court in decades, removed all references to DEI policies from federal websites, and is eliminating Offices of DEI policy from all aspects of the executive branch of government.
This got me to wonder what is the relationship of DEI engagement to employee satisfaction and corporate success?
This got me to wonder what is the relationship of DEI engagement to employee satisfaction and corporate success?
The scientific research is very clear that commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices goes hand-in-glove with high employee satisfaction and corporate profits. Numerous studies and real-world examples imply a positive correlation between companies with high employee satisfaction and those with high engagement in DEI. Her are some key connections:
1. Increased Employee Engagement and Motivation:
A June 5, 2023 article in Diversio.com reported the following results from a review of research by Glassdoor.com, McKinsey & Co, Deloitte, SHRM and other organizations. (https://diversio.com/how-diversity-equity-inclusion-can-drive-employee-engagement/#:~:text=Further%2C%20DEI%20initiatives%20work%20to,to%20greater%20employee%20satisfaction%2C%20heightened)
Feeling Valued and Included: When companies prioritize DEI, employees from all backgrounds feel valued, respected, and heard. This sense of belonging fosters a more positive and inclusive work environment, leading to increased employee engagement and motivation.
Stronger Connection to Company Values: Employees are more likely to be engaged when they believe in their company’s values and see them reflected in actions. Companies that actively champion DEI demonstrate a commitment to fairness and equality, which resonates with many employees and strengthens their connection to the organization.
Greater Sense of Purpose: DEI initiatives often focus on creating a more equitable and just workplace. Employees who feel they are contributing to a greater purpose beyond just profit are more likely to be motivated and engaged in their work.
2. Improved Employee Well-being and Satisfaction:
Rebecca Mattina shared these findings in her article published in achievers.com from Feb 10, 2025.
Psychological Safety: Inclusive workplaces where employees feel safe to be themselves without fear of discrimination or bias contribute to better mental health and overall well-being. A healthy workforce is a more productive workforce.
Reduced Stress and Conflict: Companies with strong DEI practices tend to have less conflict and tension related to differences in background, identity, or perspective. This creates a more harmonious and supportive work environment, leading to higher job satisfaction.
Increased Opportunities for Growth: DEI initiatives often include mentorship programs, leadership development opportunities, and other resources designed to support the career advancement of employees. This focus on growth and development can significantly boost all employees’ satisfaction.
3. Enhanced Company Performance and Innovation:
The online magazine of the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Liberal and Professional Studies, suggests that a strong DEI commitment also encouraged enhanced corporate performance. Greater Creativity and Problem-Solving: Diverse teams bring together a wider range of perspectives, experiences, and ideas, leading to more creative solutions and better problem-solving. Many of the most innovative ideas come from the breadth of experiences and cultural backgrounds represented in a diverse workforce. It is the ability to see a problem or challenge through differing lenses that brings innovation.
Improved Decision-Making: Inclusive decision-making processes that consider input from diverse voices are more likely to result in well-rounded and effective strategies. These processes are more likely to breakdown group think, identify blind spots and consider all stakeholders positions in decisions.
Stronger Company Reputation: Companies with a strong commitment to DEI are often seen as more attractive employers, leading to better talent acquisition and retention. A positive reputation can also enhance customer loyalty and brand image.

Accenture: Accenture has made significant strides in promoting diversity and inclusion, and its employees report high levels of satisfaction with the company’s culture and values.
Nvidia: Nvidia’s focus on creating an inclusive and equitable workplace has contributed to its strong employee engagement and high levels of innovation.
Costco: As an employer, Costco routinely receives very high marks from its employees because they feel valued and heard. The company places great emphasis on promoting from within and providing the training needed for that growth.
The evidence seems clear: companies that prioritize DEI are more likely to have highly satisfied and engaged employees. This, in turn, leads to numerous benefits, including improved company performance, increased innovation, and a stronger reputation. By fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, companies can create a positive cycle where employee satisfaction and business success reinforce each other.
