My professional journey is defined by two parallel routes: “Aviation” and “Teaching/Mentoring.” My passion for aviation was ignited during my time with the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary – Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in high school. My involvement with the CAP also revealed a strong inclination towards instruction and guidance.
Obtaining my pilot’s license in college presented a significant challenge, requiring me to expand my comfort zone, a real test of pushing past my comfort zone and those nagging fears. But aviation opened up a whole new airspace of leadership and management opportunities, both within CAP and professionally.
I derived significant satisfaction from facilitating skill development, whether in individual or group settings. This inclination led to work with non-profit organizations, where my focus was on providing job search skills training and coaching to high school dropouts. I learned the importance of meeting individuals where they are, not where society expects them to be, and that cultivating mutual respect is essential for establishing meaningful connections.
Aviation provided opportunities for leadership and management roles, both within CAP and professionally. My experience at FlightSafety International involved marketing pilot and aircraft maintenance technician training a convergence of my key interests. Subsequently, I advanced into aircraft charter sales, ultimately serving as Vice President.
A shift in my career trajectory occurred when I departed from aviation sales. The job search process itself became a focal point, leading me to discover a new professional direction. This led to positions in career services at trade and career schools, where I gained considerable satisfaction from recruiting and instructing individuals in job search strategies, supporting their entry into fields such as healthcare, IT, administration, and court reporting. I maintained my connection to aviation through CAP, continuing to experience the exhilaration of flight and share that passion with young people.
My career flightpath led to roles in workforce development with the New Jersey and County Departments of Labor, and at several colleges, before I established my career coaching business. My experience in the college environment, managing adult and continuing education programs, broadened my professional scope. My work with the unemployed included project management, human resources, management roles, and extensive involvement in the pharmaceutical industry, from administrative to clinical trial management.
Currently, in addition to individual coaching, I facilitate multiple networking groups, serving a diverse clientele that includes C-suite executives to recent graduates. I have assisted these individuals in navigating their careers across various sectors, including finance and technology. My clients consistently achieve success in their job searches, with 87% securing meaningful employment within 4-6 months. They frequently express appreciation for my authenticity, attentive listening, and the tailored guidance I provide, which directly addresses their specific needs.
My business has expanded to routes in corporate training on essential “soft skills,” such as sales, leadership, management, supervision, and communication. Employers have reported that participants leave these training sessions with concrete, actionable strategies for immediate improvement. Clients have also noted improvements in management morale and a reduction in employee issues, resulting from supervisors adopting a more proactive approach in their roles. I derive considerable satisfaction from sharing my expertise in these areas with current and future leaders.
As an author, I share my insights through publications such as, “Take Control of Your Job Search,” which achieved #1 best-seller status in its category on Amazon for three weeks and was recognized by BookAuthority.com as the Best New Read in its Category for 2024. The book is my flight manual, now available for your use. Additionally, I am a keynote speaker, presenting at annual conferences for professional associations.
I’ve always been that professional pilot, committed to continuous learning and skill development. Public speaking, curriculum development, team leadership, and complex project management have become integral competencies. Similar to the challenges and rewards of learning to fly, I have consistently sought to expand my capabilities and achieve new levels of professional accomplishment. While I continue to appreciate the thrill of witnessing aircraft take off and land, my greatest satisfaction now comes from empowering others to overcome their professional obstacles, spread their wings, and attain fulfilling career heights.
