In your lifetime there a few events that deeply seer an indelible mark into your mind and psyche like the day you met the love of your life, the January 6th riots on the US Capital, the day of your child’s birth, and the terror attacks of 9/11! I’m sure you have these and other moments you always will remember as if it were yesterday.

These events not only mark time, they also serve to shape who we are whether individually or collectively. I’ll never forget driving down the parkway to see the plane hit World Trade Tower 1 on 9/11. Or sitting in my office at school with a 19-year-old student who could not reach his parents in lower Manhattan. And, how we shared our fears and hopes for what that day would bring. How we worked with his extended family and neighbors to find is 7-year-old brother and arrange for them both to get home from their schools.

Life as we know it changed that day just as it changed on March 16, 2020 with COVID and countless other times. It seems life and business disruptors are coming more frequently and with greater impact these days. And maintaining employment through them is even harder.

Yet, that is what you must do “ find ways to identify the probable coming disrupters, plan for them, and respond to them in ways that show your personal and business resilience and ability to adapt. Never has the saying been so true as now. As the Greek Philosopher, Heraclitus, said so long ago, There is no constant but change.

It reminds me of this quote from the famous American architect and inventor, Buckminster Fuller, You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.

Is that not what Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have done? And in doing so, found ways to disrupt business and the social fabric of life in the process.

How can you predict or prepare for future business disruptors?

That is the big question, now, isn’t it? Predicting future business disruptors can be tricky, but by adopting a proactive and informed approach, you can increase your chances of identifying potential threats and opportunities. Here are some strategies:

  1. Stay Updated on Emerging Trends

Identify relevant trends: Focus on trends that directly impact your industry or role. Pay particular attention to areas of fast growth and change like emerging technologies, social and cultural shifts, and economic conditions.

Assess potential threats: Evaluate how emerging trends could affect your job security or career prospects.

  1. Analyze Industry Dynamics

Identify vulnerabilities: Determine areas where your skills or experience may become obsolete.

Develop contingency plans: Create backup plans in case your current role becomes redundant or obsolete.

Business Models: Assess the viability of existing business models and look for potential disruptions.

Emulate successful employees: Look around to find the people who are surviving different disruptions or are not just surviving but thriving in the organization. Find their success behaviors and do the same.

  1. Leverage Data and Analytics

Skill assessment: Use data to assess your current skill set and identify areas for improvement.

Career mapping: Analyze industry trends to map out potential career paths.

Market Research: Conduct surveys, focus groups, and market analysis to identify emerging trends. A simple way is to post some polls on LinkedIn.

  1. Engage with Experts

Career and leadership Coaches: Seek advice from expert coaches who can help you identify opportunities and develop a career plan.

Mentors: Connect with mentors who can provide guidance and support.

In all these cases, use LinkedIn as a great way to follow and engage with them commenting on their posts.

Networking, Networking, Networking: Always be developing and maintaining relationships with people internally and externally. Sometimes there is just nothing you can do to protect your job.

  1. Foster a Culture of Innovation

Upskill: Invest in your professional development by acquiring new skills and knowledge.

Encourage Experimentation: Create a personal and corporate culture that supports experimentation and risk-taking.

Always Be Learning: Constantly seek opportunities to learn new skills whether paid for by the employer or yourself. While unemployed, take advantage of the Department of Labor training programs.

  1. Diversify Your Skill Set

Cross-functional skills: Develop skills that can be applied to multiple roles or industries.

Transferable skills: Focus on transferable skills that are valuable in various contexts.

  1. Scenario Planning

Develop Scenarios: Create different future scenarios based on potential disruptions. Organizations do this to prepare for contingencies. You should do the same for your career.

Assess Implications: Evaluate the potential impact of each scenario on your career.

Develop Strategies: to address the challenges and opportunities presented by different scenarios.

  1. Build a Personal Brand

Online presence: Create a strong online presence to showcase your expertise and accomplishments.

Thought Leadership: Attend industry events and conferences not just to build relationships, but also to b e seen as a thought leader and expert in your field.

Post Original Content: to LinkedIn and other platforms where people will see you as the got to person for information and solutions.

  1. Financial Planning

Emergency fund: Build an emergency fund to provide financial security in case of job loss.

Retirement planning: Contribute to retirement savings to ensure financial stability in the long term.

Institute any of these strategies and you improve your chances of surviving a disruption. By combining these approaches, you can increase your ability to anticipate and respond to potential career disruptors, positioning yourself for long-term success. Remember, it is your responsibility to manage your career. Be proactive in approaching your future.
